I experimented with 'match colour' in photoshop, by downloading a picture of the milky way into photoshop then chose match colour you have to have the other image open in photoshop and select this to match to, It will be very bright and milky but you need to tweak the sliders to desired effect I think it has brought out the colour we naturally associate with this type of image.
